 "An All Right Radio" 2010-09-15
By Philip Willcoxon (Fort Worth, Texas)
After figuring out how to set the settings on this thing it turned out to be an alright radio for the price. The color setting is a pretty cool setting. You can color coordinate your system to match your dash lights. One thing I didn't like is that it says HD ready. Please be aware that this doesn't mean it will play HD stations after installing just this system (that I know of) It says that you have to have a separate unit along with this radio to play HD radio stations. That kind of bummed me out! I give this unit three stars out of five mostly because of the hard to read text on the display. It is VERY dim and hard to read! Even with dimmer off. Otherwise it is a great system.

 "Unacceptable AM reception" 2010-09-11
By D. Kosters
This receiver has many nice features. However, it exhibits a piercing heterodyne whistle on the AM band that doesn't occur with my original (GM) radio or with two other car radios tested for comparison. This problem occurs only with a couple of local AM stations, but one of them carries the baseball broadcasts I listen to regularly.

Heterodyne whistle is usually more of a problem at night (because of signal bounce off of the ionosphere). It is caused by the carrier from a second station mixing with the carrier of the desired station. If the two carrier frequencies are close enough, the difference in their frequencies will be detected as an audible whine/whistle. Most modern AM receivers are designed to minimize this effect. Unfortunately, the KD-R610 (or at least the one I purchased) doesn't get the job done here.

 "Excellent Receiver!" 2010-08-01
By Stephen J. Miller (Apex, NC)
I installed this JVC receiver in my Suzkui Grand Vitara. The install was extremely easy. Credit for the ease of the install has to go to Suzuki and the vehicle specific wiring harness I bought as much as to JVC.

Even without installing upgraded speakers (which I will do soon) I am exteremely pleased with the quality of the sound/music. The options built in for customizing/adjusting the sound to suit you preferences are amazing.

I love the adjustable color options on the face plate this was a big factor in my selection of JVC as my last after market receiver never looked right as the face plate lighting contracted sharply with the vehicles' dash lighting.

The receivers' controls are not necessarily intuitive. For example, the power button serves double duty with selecting the source (AM/FM etc) it takes some practice to turn the unit off instead of switching sources. The remote works better and easier than the controls on the face plate.

If you need/want to up-grade your receiver economically and want some really "high end" options, seriously consider the JVC KD-R610. It's a really great receiver that will not disappoint on either features or music quality. You'll get use to the quirky face plate controls.

 "JVC KD R 610" 2010-07-24
By Michael Monroe (Lake Tahoe, CA)
I had the JVC installed in my BMW Z3 to replace the stock radio. The primary reason was the lack of iPod connection from my stock radio.

The unit works well and the reception is far better than the original Blapunkt. I live in the mountains and the reception in most stations is spotty, fading in and out on my old unit. This unit keeps the station clear and bright all the time, no fading. I am impressed.

The only down sides are:

The instructions are a little confusing, the buttons are a little small and the screen is impossible to see in the daytime (I have a convertible) I would recommend the unit. Amazon shipped in a few days at around $120.

"Great value for an upgrade over stock HU." 2010-05-23
By B. Hoo (Bay Area, CA)
I bought this headunit to replace my factory DD headunit in my 2006 Nissan Frontier. Paired with a metra kit and wiring harness, the install was a breeze. Here are the requirements I had when looking for a new deck:

1. iPod/iPhone support

2. AUX In

3. MP3/WMA support

While all of these seem basic, they were what I was looking for and were all part of this unit. The price was right at $140 (same at [...]where I got mine with free harness and metra kit and shipping.

Likes:

Support for above

Price

Color change to match existing dash colors

Ease of install

Dislikes:

Can't control music from iPhone, only from headunit

Interface is clumsy - not intuitive

Here are some pics from my install:
