 "Worked great... at first" 2010-09-29
By RxSlaughter
Had you asked me two weeks ago to write this review I'd have said "Best bang for the buck ever!" ... but that's two weeks ago.

Today I drop my review from 5 to 2 stars. The USB port for no reason whatsoever decided to emit ear piercing white noise static whenever its selected. I first thought "hey its probably a bad cable" so I swapped out the cable. No help. Then started thinking maybe my iPod is bad. I tried my friends. Then my girlfriends. Then FOUR more iPods/iPhones (even a Zune) on it. Regardless of the cable used they all emit that same sound.

I can verify its not the iPods by using the AUX plugin. That works fine. Something in the USB port is possessed by the deamon of bleeding ears.

The weird thing is regardless of the volume of the player the white noise comes out at max volume... which while driving a car at 70MPH on the freeway is dangerous. First time it happened I almost pissed myself.

Needless to day, I now get to see how Kenwood is about exchange/return policy.

"Versatile Unit - Great bang for the buck" 2010-09-08
By EngrPaul (Pennsylvania)
Pros:

Very clear sound at moderate volumes.

Plays USB memory flash drives with tagging.

Fluorescent display has large digits and is easy to read in bright (but not direct) sunlight.

Steering wheel controls work great with installation of Modifry DCI-2 (s2000 specific)

Fits a Honda s2000 easily and allows use of the Kenwood faceplate trim.

Allows the s2000 stereo cover door to close, as long as you don't have a straight cable in the AUX or USB jacks.*

Removable faceplate works fine. A little pouch is provided.

Subwoofer RCA output with adjustable low pass filter.**

L and R RCA line level outputs.

HD radio works fine, I like the no-nonsence automatic switch from standard to HD radio.

Adjustable volume boost on AUX input (helps mp3 players that have poor output levels)

USB jack can be used to power a generic device, even if the stereo doesn't recognize the device. (i.e. charge a phone). This is nice because I get a lot of ignition noise through my power jack.

Lighting looks nice but blue buttons are hard to read.

System EQ, if you like that sort of thing.

Affordable, especially from Amazon.

Cons:

Infrared remote is completely disabled when using steering wheel control input (verified).

Maximum number of songs per USB memory folder is 255, others are ignored (alphabetically).

Can't shuffle more than 255 songs with USB memory (can only random play within one folder).

...what, is it 1980? Maybe this is to keep USB mounting time time reasonable. Firmware upgrade please!

Scrolling display shows a limited amount of info and has limited number of characters it can display.

No Rear USB - only front.

No Rear AUX input - only front.

All features driven by one knob takes my attention away from the road, until I get used to it. At least the setting mode persists on the display if you take your attention off the stereo and come back to it.

Can't adjust button backlight color for better readability.

No ZUNE "support", will play through AUX and charge it through the USB data cable.

*I use a right angle phone plug for AUX, and a nano USB reader with micro SDHC card (16GB), these allow me to close the door and keep my entire music collection on the stereo. The USB drive stays with the face place.

**Separate amped subwoofer is needed to make best use of the system's power (turn down bass and let the subwoofer do all the work (watts). The onboard amp has plenty of power if you're only expecting mids and highs, expect it to produce bass and you'll reach distortion quickly... like any other head unit I suppose.

"High end feature head unit for low price" 2010-09-07
By Ed
You really can't complain about this head unit when it comes to how much it costs and how many features it has that usually you only see in the double din sets. Ipod support is flawless (5th gen nano tested), both via the head unit and directly through the ipod. HD radio support is there without an addon with two modes of radio reception. You can choose transparent fallback to analog radio or digital only. Flash drive media reading is fast and playback of digital media and regular cds is great. No skipping of burned cds even when hitting lots of bumps. You get 6 preamp outputs for your amp hookups (front, back, sub). I'm really pleased with this head unit. My only issue is an issue that most head units have, and that is the lack of ogg vorbis support or flac or many other non-mp3/aac media formats. Also, it would be nice to have the ability to save all your settings to a flash drive, as there are many and the unit will reset when you unhook the battery.
