 "Good if you're on a budget" 2010-09-12
By adam.tuttle
I bought this around Christmas time 2009, specifically because I wanted something that would be easy to install in my truck (as listed by Crutchfield), with Aux input for my iPod. It has lived up to those requirements very well. I had a much harder time dislodging the factory head unit than installing this one ('05 Explorer Sport Trac), and the Aux input works well and is easily selected either via the faceplate buttons or the remote, without taking your eyes off of the road.

Now, the cons:

1 - Station memory is not easily switched between (Short-tap of Menu button, Turn the dial to select the desired preset location, Press the dial button to select), and is easily accidentally overridden by the auto-program feature that puts highest signal-strength stations into the first memory locations. Learned this the hard way, more than once. There is plenty of room on the faceplate - they should have stuck on a few buttons for quick switching between stations.

2 - I considered the HD radio a welcome bonus, but it was not something I was seeking out. Now I wish I didn't have it, because it's more trouble than it's worth in my area. This unit will use the HD signal if present, or the Analog signal otherwise. There is a noticeable jump-ahead when switching from HD to Analog (because HD has a digital encoding/decoding delay), and then a lag when switching from Analog back to HD (sounds like a CD skipping: repeats a word or two). If you're in an area where the HD signal goes in and out frequently (every few seconds), as I am, then this is incredibly annoying. There is a setting to force the unit to require/stay on one signal or the other, which is useful:

* Long-hold of menu button

* Rotate dial to find "Tuner"

* Click dial to select

* Rotate dial to find "Blend Hold"

* Click dial to select

* Rotate dial to either "Auto" (default), "Digital", or "Analog"

* Click dial to select

* Short-click of Menu button to return to main screen

... but the unit resets to its default behavior (Auto) whenever you change station or turn the vehicle off & back on -- so I only find it useful when on a long road trip and staying on the same station for a while at a time.

3 - Even the dim setting for the LED display & lights is quite bright, especially at night. I wish I could set it even lower. I never use the bright setting, even in bright daylight.

Overall, I'm pleased with the purchase. The radio memory issue doesn't impact me heavily because my two favorite stations are close to each other in frequency and easy to seek between; and I have gotten into the habit of setting Blend Hold to Analog if I know I'm going to be driving through a low-signal area for more than a few minutes, like my morning commute. For the price, I would buy it again even knowing these shortcomings. The primary reason for the purchase, Aux input, works well. Thus 4 instead of 5 stars.

 "Amazed with all the features for the price!" 2010-07-03
By J. Ratajesak (Oceanside, CA USA)
I was using a Maximo FM Transmitter to play my MP3 device on my AM/FM/CD stero. I live in southern California and I was constantly trying to find an unused FM channel using the FM transmitter. After a while I decided to upgrade my car stero that had an auxiliary input so I could play my MP3 device. The JVC KD-HDR20 was an excellant purchase. The stero has so many features that I'm still finding features about my new stero that I didn't know about. If you have only used factory stocked steros in the past you might have a bit of a learning curve figuring out all the features of the stero but well worth it. I can tell the difference when I'm listening to a HD radio station even though I drive a F250 Ford pick up with a diesel engine which is noiser than a car. I have the stero hooked up to the speakers that came with my pick up and the stero has plenty of power. I like the fact you can change the display on the radio so you can see what the name of song that is playing which is scrolled acrossed the display along with the name of the artist and the name of the album. You can choose auto, analog, or digital for the FM. Also, if you have a weak radio station you can choose mono which brings in the station even better but you sacrifice the stero feature. The display on the stero makes it easy to find where you left off listening to a book on CD. I don't find it difficult to program or find a radio station. Once the radio station is saved, you can press the "Menu" than turn the volume dial to the preset station, than press the volume button or use the up or down feature on the remote to go from one saved radio station to another. I can't say one bad thing about the JVC KD-HDR20 and I would definately would recommend to anyone and would buy again. For the money and all the features, this unit is well worth the money. Because my truck rides on the rough side, I find it easier to control the stero with the remote. The only thing I need to do is figure out where I can attach the remote to some place where I can reach easliy. I would also recommend the Scosche IU3.5RC 3.5mm Retractable Cable to connect to your MP3 unit Scosche IU3.5RC 3.5mm Retractable Cable

 "Decent first HD radio!" 2010-06-14
By Joanna Benitez
Pretty decent overall radio and easy to install. I installed it in my 87 Honda Accord. I bought a harness and installed the radio in about 30 min. HD signal in LA is awesome. AM radio sounds like FM, no static or popping. FM sounds perfect. Decent sound. EQ is alright, no bass but thats expected at this price range. It can put out some volume with stock system especially CD's. Overall amazing value. I would recommend.

 "Great product..." 2010-04-13

For the price I paid, this is a great unit. I've had no problems with it so far. It's hard to operate while driving, unless you use the remote. With the remote, it's very easy...

 "Nice Entry Level Replacement Radio" 2010-03-28
By M. J. Bodmann
I was looking for a radio that would allow my wife to plug in her iPhone but didn't want to break the bank. We've also got Sirius so I wanted one that was compatible with that, and was curious about HD radio as well. Looked at several that cost 2-3 times as much and didn't offer much more; for the price I doubt you can find one that fits the bill better.

Pros:

Nice basic design, nothing fancy. Remote is nice touch. Decent sound quality, 7-band EQ, nice volume with no distortion. CD player plays MP3's (which is nice) and is an HD radio. It has the front AUX input for iPhone or MP3 player that i wanted plus rear inputs for satellite or other accessories like subwoofer or CD changer (does anyone still use those?).

Cons:

Doesn't dim with dash lights and is BRIGHT at night. Menus are somewhat tedious to cycle through.

Took me about an hour to install. Good bang-for-the-buck. definitely would recommend to friends.
