"Sony Not What It Used To Be: Better Units Elsewhere" 2010-09-03
By Black Panzer (Alexandria, VA)
Here is the bottom-line up front: The product is indicative of Sony's slide in quality, function, and customer service in recent years. The price does not justify what you are purchasing. In fact, for the price of this unit, a comparable Alpine, Kenwood or Panasonic head-unit can be purchased with more features and a better interface. Overall it is a tradeoff of good and bad quirks that try to balance but land more on the bad side of things. The only reason I purchased this unit was because I had a merchandise credit and a discount with a retailer making the purchase much less than buying a comparable Kenwood I had in mind. Oh, and Sony customer service is worse than a vomit salad with a side of burned rubber...

This unit was purchased and installed about three weeks ago. I have had enough experience to say it is so-so. First the bad news, the comments about the blue display washing out in bright day light are very factual. I have to lean over to read the display when the sun shines directly on the dash and unit. The clock is hard to read (with very small characters) when it is operating on one of the source functions. This is frustrating and potentially dangerous when you want to glance at the time but have to lean over to read.

Another complaint would be the sensitivity of the very prominent selection/volume button. Sometimes when adjusting the volume you may accidentally push in the button taking you to another menu. The unit is VERY bright and can be distracting. Be advised that the dimming feature only works if it is wired in to your car's dimmer switch. Since spicing into your car wiring may lead to other problems, I do not recommend this unless you really know what you're doing. Also, the auto-dimming feature on the stereo only operates the blue text portion of the unit and not the sunlight bright white light around the volume button. Depending on the placement or the stereo in your car, this can be very distracting. Whatever you do, DO NOT unplug your Ipod until the unit is turned off, if you do you might be asking for trouble which leads me to my comment about customer service.

By far the biggest problem I had with this was the stereo locking itself in USB mode which prompted my unplugging the Ipod. Afterwards, I could not get the stereo to operate my Ipod from the head-unit and my stereo and equalizer pre-sets disappeared. I called Sony and was greeted by a Pilipino named "Brandon" (not his real name) trying his best to mimic an American accent. Okay, it looks like Sony Corp and in particular Sony, USA has decided to follow the rest of the corporate sheep and focus on short term profit gains through outsourcing and in the process let quality and customer service drop faster than an Enron stock-chart. Sony, (and other Corporatate "Greeders") please do not insult our intelligence and please refocus on the customer. If there is anything that irritates an American or Canadian, for that matter, is not being genuine or superficial. We can tell "Brandon" is not American and we would have more respect for all of you if your "reps" would answer in their native accent, i.e. whatever Indian dialect accent or Tagalog accent they may have.

Anyway, when I explained the problem to "Brandon," I was put on the infamous hold while he checked. As a rule of thumb, the longer you are on hold the more you have stumped the chump. When Brandon came back, he had no answers. Brandon, then tried to explain that the unit was obsolete being a year old. When I pointed out that my unit was manufactured in April of 2010. He decided it was Apple's problem and should have my Ipod serviced. Needless to say, Mr. Brandon was no help. I asked for an escalation of the call to speak to someone who knew what they are doing and was put on hold for another 27 minutes. Somehow, I was mysteriously disconnected. Frustrated, I took a break and decided to rectify the issue myself. I was only able to fix the problem by disconnecting and reconnecting the negative cable from my car battery. This process apparently rebooted the stereo. I have not had a problem like that since but am leery of it happening again.

When the unit is working, the Bluetooth functions are fantastic. The streaming Bluetooth utility and phone have no problems with function or sound. When I use the phone, the people I speak to explain the sound is clear with no disturbance even with the window down.

The Ipod function is okay, not fantastic. It reads the Ipod menus well (when it is working) although selecting the right song or search function can be a chore with numerous menus to drill through. The search function has a jump feature which will allow to the user to find a specific song or artist quickly but, again, you still have to weed through a number of menus to reach it. The sound quality and equalizer choices are great. Once you get used to the button lay-out is very easy to use. Sony could have placed the "Zappin" button further away from the advance and rewind buttons. Also, The shuffle and repeat buttons are miniscule, hard to find, and are not lit. Unless you memorize where they are and careful when pushing them, you will have problems.

Overall, I would state that is an overpriced product for what it is. If you can purchase it at a discount, do so. Keep in mind there are better choices out there than this product.

"It's a great stereo that does everything I want it to do" 2010-08-30
By No E (Fairfax Co. VA)
What's Great: the sound, the functions, the Bluetooth, the external microphone. When on a hands free call, the people I am speaking to can hear me clearly. My iphone 3GS can be connected using the USB port, and controlled using the stereo. I can connect my MP3 player. I also have my portable XM radio dock directly connected to the stereo. Music sounds great, regardless of the source. For the money, you can't beat this stereo.

What's not so great: As you've probably read in the other reviews, the glare from the sun makes it impossible to see the screen. To fix this, I covered the display area of the stereo with a piece of plastic anti-glare screen I had bought for my iphone. It's not a perfect fix, but it is an improvement.

I bought this unit to replace an aftermarket Kenwood head unit I had in my 1995 Intrepid. After fifteen years, I thought it might be nice to have something that recognized devices built in this century. The things I was looking for were Bluetooth integration with my Motorola Droid and, possibly, the ability to control my iPod-based Rockbox ([...] for more).

The unit came with the hardware needed to slot the head unit into the same space as my old Kenwood. The wiring harness matched up cleanly to the Crutchfield harness I had for the Kenwood as well. The installation was relatively painless taking just over 1.5 hours (including solder time).

Functionally this unit is amazing compared to my old Kenwood. It syncs up readily to my Droid and allows my to make calls, browse the contact list and control music on my phone. The remote microphone (installed on the driver's visor) picks up my voice well and the noise cancellation has my wife wondering how she ever put up with my Bluetooth headset.

On the iPod control front, I am running an iPod Video gen 5.5 whose firmware has been replaced with Rockbox. The head unit does not recognize the Rockbox and causes it to reboot into disc mode. This is not a failing on the part of the head unit, but Rockbox users be aware. If I reboot the iPod into the Apple firmware, the head unit recognizes it but since there is no music stored in Apple's strange obfuscated fashion, the head unit says there is no music. I am still able to use a 3.5mm patch cable to listen to my Rockbox via the Aux jack.

This is no Ford Sync device, but it certainly fits the bill for this Droid user...

 "Nice unit" 2010-07-16

I bought this mainly for the bluetooth calling capabilities. The sound is amazing! People can't even tell I'm using it. You definitely have to use the included microphone though, and make sure its placement is well thought out (mine was installed at the top of the drivers side pillar near the visor.) Has good controls and the remote is very detailed, albeit slightly large (almost like a "house stereo" remote.) I paired it with my iPhone 4 and it sounds great. I haven't tried the iphone cable connection or bluetooth streaming yet, but the USB is fantastic (I used a tiny 16GB USB stick.) I haven't tried the phone book functions yet either, but iPhone voice command works well.

My only complaint would be there's no quick and easy way to get to the calling menu right away..it's a 3-4 step process make a call. However, when receiving a call it's extremely simple.

**Update**

iPhone 4 via USB works great, but like another reviewer said, it's better to control it from the phone than the head unit if you have lots of songs. I also ran into a problem with the USB drive. It seems that even though windows says I've put all my songs on the 16GB USB drive, the head unit only sees some. I think I found the problem..when I was dragging and dropping music onto the drive, I was running like 3 different windows explorer windows from 3 different sources. It doesn't like this. You have to load one group of files/music at a time. When that's done, do the next or else it only sees the songs you loaded until you started another concurrent file source. It could just be Vista x86 acting up, but that's what I ran into. I was going to try loading it from Ubuntu, but I don't have the time or patience.

Also, using the remote, you can get to the calls quick, but as stated above you can't get there without a few step using just the head unit and not the remote.

 "Very Pleased" 2010-06-03
By Walter D. Fenyk
Purchased this unit for a 98 pathfinder - really just wanted to add Bluetooth and iPod. Have only been playing with it for a short time but thought i would offer some feedback for others looking at the unit. Overall i am very satisfied with the unit and for the price i paid there is no reason to complain. (using the exisitng Bose amp and speakers that were factory installed)

Flaws:

1. iPod control from the head unit is basically useless if you have alot of music. Solution just control the music from the ipod. use the head unit to advance songs but again almost impossible to find the song you want when you have several thousand songs. having playlists created makes it a bit easier. Sony could have done a much better job with the ipod interface.

2. Display - truely is tough to see in daylight. turning off the background graphics helped some but just very hard to see. Others have reported this.

3. Phone book - had no trouble loading my phone book off my Blackberry Storm. However, i have a very large list of contacts and they did not fit into the units memory. I need to do a bit of research here to find out the deal. Solution - just browse the phonebook vs loading it. And only loading the numbers of contacts that i care to have in the unit.

Likes:

1. Bluetooth phone is very good - mic sensitivity can be adjusted and very clear for hands free.

2. Bluetooth streaming music - really impressed here- dont always have my ipod with me - but always have my blackberry where i have a few thousand songs stored. if your phone supports stereo Bluetooth you can stream music directly to the unit.
